This new format of the CONCACAF Champions League puts the Seattle Sounders on the road for their first competitive match of 2018. Their trip to San Salvador to face Santa Tecla will be without major talent, in the first leg of the two leg series.

Lacking Clint Dempsey, Victor Rodriguez and Magnus Wolff Eikrem the team will need to lean heavily on Jordan Morris for scoring. The defense will be ad hoc, as well, likely dependent on Cristian Roldan and Stefan Frei more than the backline. As is typical in CCL matches the opponent will use trickery and time wasting. The Sounders must not fall victim to tomfoolery. Santa Tecla has shown an ability to counter quite well.

Absences: Injury, international duty and suspension

Seattle: Osvaldo Alonso and Kelvin Leerdam are listed as out. Victor Rodriguez is listed as questionable. Clint Dempsey, Roman Torres, Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Rodriguez did not travel.

Melvin Matamoros of Honduras is the center referee. He has three CCL appearances in the center and gave out 8 yellows. In international club and country matches he gave out 21 yellows, no straight reds and 2 penalties in 9 games. CONCACAF does not use VAR in CCL.
