FINAL SCORE, Sounders 4, Santa Tecla 0: Behind a goal and two assists from Nicolas Lodeiro and two assists from Clint Dempsey the Seattle Sounders advanced to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. They’ll face Chivas de Guadalajara, hosting the first leg on Wednesday.

Sounders 4, Santa Tecla 0: Almost immediately after Chad Marshall put the Sounders up 3-0, Magnus Wolff Eikrem extended the lead to 4-0 after working a pretty give-and-go with Clint Dempsey. Eikrem started it with some possession near midfield, pushed it forward to Dempsey. Eikrem continued his run into the box and was rewarded by a perfectly weighted ball from Dempsey, finishing it smoothly with his left.

Sounders 3, Santa Tecla 0: Chad Marshall effectively put the game away with a header off a Nicolas Lodeiro corner. The corner was created, though, by a beautiful switching ball from Magnus Wolff Eikrem that ultimately forced a clearance.

Sounders 2, Santa Tecla 0: Nicolas Lodeiro gave the Sounders a massive goal, putting them ahead 3-2 on aggregate. The sequence started with Harry Shipp winning a header in the defensive half and pushing it ahead to Clint Dempsey. His pass to Will Bruin was a little behind, but he was able to get it to Magnus Wolff Eikrem. Wolff’s diagonal pass through the box found Dempsey, who controlled and found Lodeiro streaking into box. Lodeiro got just enough of his head on the ball to get it into the back of the net.

Sounders 1, Santa Tecla 0: Magnus Wolff Eikrem entered at the half, replacing Tony Alfaro and essentially putting the Sounders into a 4-1-3-2. The move paid almost immediate dividends. The pace of play picked up and the Sounders won a corner. Although the ensuing corner didn’t do much, the Sounders maintained possession. The ball found its way to Nicolas Lodeiro, who put in a low cross that found Will Bruin in front of goal. He finished it easily.

Halftime update: The Sounders created a handful of decent chances but nothing that seriously troubled Santa Tecla and went into the half tied 0-0. That means the Sounders will still need a goal to go through.

The Sounders’ two best looks came off free kicks. The first found the head of Cristian Roldan, but his attempt didn’t have much on it and was easily saved. A few minutes later Nicolas Lodeiro found Gustav Svensson on another free kick, but his was right at goalkeeper Joel Almeida.

Tifo: ECS unveiled a rare CONCACAF Champions League tifo. It read “Climbing Higher” with each of their six MLS-era trophies represented by a peak and one bigger one alluding to the CCL trophy.

Your wait is over. The Seattle Sounders finally return home to CenturyLink Field after their failure in the 2017 MLS Cup Final. Their first match is a must win against Santa Tecla FC of El Salvador. Not only is it a must win, but Seattle needs to win by more than a single goal, or win 1-nil. A 2-1 win would advance to extra time. There is no away goal rule in extra time; if the score remains tied the two sides would kick from the spot.

Brian Schmetzer’s lineup choice was hampered in San Salvador and it somewhat remains so. Jordan Morris joins Osvaldo Alonso and Kelvin Leerdam as out. The Sounders will need to look for offense from Will Bruin, Clint Dempsey and their supporting cast. Scoring will be vital as Santa Tecla sits back. Giving up an early goal to the Salvadoran team would be crushing.

Absences: Injury, international duty and suspension

Seattle: Morris, Alonso and Leerdam are all out. Victor Rodriguez is listed as questionable.

Santa Tecla: Undisclosed.

Jordy Delem saw yellow in the first leg. If he sees yellow tonight he would be suspended should the Sounders advance to the quarterfinals.

Walter Lopez is the center referee. There is no VAR.

Keys to the Game:

  • Use off-ball movement to beat the bunker.
