We’re rather familiar with major non-soccer events preventing the use of CenturyLink Field and/or harming the way the turf looks. Chivas Guadalajara just hosted a major concert and Estadio Akron doesn’t just look bad, it looks like the ball won’t play true.
That’s the type of damage that will force defenders to punt it more frequently, because they can’t risk turnovers. It could impact shooting for both teams too.
Seattle Sounders could have field trouble of their own, if they advance. With the New York Red Bulls winning, the Sounders would be forced to host leg as the lower seed (the tournament reseeds after the quarterfinals with seeds determined by total points claimed). That leg is scheduled for April 3-5 with CenturyLink Field hosting a Supercross event on Saturday April 7. The conversion to hosting motocross is significant and may take more time than is available with an early hosting date for the CCL. If the Sounders can’t host at CenturyLink Field, the most likely alternate venue is probably Safeco Field.
