Nicolas Lodeiro has been called up for a pair of Uruguay’s friendlies during the China Cup in late March. Aside from the wear and tear that comes with a flight to the other side of the world, though, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the Seattle Sounders as they have a league bye that weekend and the CONCACAF Champions League will be on a break as well.
The China Cup is structured as a four-team “tournament” with each team scheduled to play twice. Uruguay will open against Czech Republic on March 23. If they win, they’d play the winner of China-Wales in the “championship” game on March 26; the third-place game will be played on the same day between the losers of the two games.
This could be an important set of matches for Lodeiro’s place in the national team. Although he’s been getting regular call-ups, he’s fallen out of the regular rotation with just a single appearance in 2017 and just three since moving to the Sounders in the summer of 2016.
