Three Big Storylines:
- Major League Soccer will get a new look this weekend as 23 teams, including the Seattle Sounders, will be wearing the Parley Ocean Plastic jerseys as part of their Earth Day 2018 celebrations. Here is a link to all 23 teams with photos of the jerseys. When your team does not have a kit sponsor, hello Houston Dynamo, then they look like a really plain white jersey with black trim.
- The Rocky Mountain Cup opens play this weekend as the Colorado Rapids travel to Real Salt Lake (ESPN+, 6:00 PM, Saturday). RSL was destroyed last week by 4-0 at New York City FC. It is still early, but between that result and a 5-1 home loss to LAFC there might be trouble brewing in Utah. RSL is playing their kids, but if early returns are any indication they might be susceptible to an organized counter attack. RSL does have home wins over the New York Red Bulls (1-0) and Vancouver Whitecaps (2-1). The Rapids look to be still adjusting to their new coach (Anthony Hudson) and identity (New New Zealand) but are coming in boasting a four game unbeaten streak with wins over Toronto FC and the Philadelphia Union sandwiched around draws with FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City.
- After the Seattle Sounders wrap up their Sunday victory, the Portland Timbers finish the weekend slate of MLS action by hosting New York City FC at 3 PM in an intriguing matchup. NYCFC have the early lead in the Supporters’ Shield race with 17 points from 7 played (2.43 PPG) and are undefeated on the season (5-0-2). After a five game road trip to open the season due to stadium construction, the Timbers returned home last weekend and held on for a 3-2 win over Minnesota United.
From a Sounders Point of View:
Did you see what happened last night? The Sounders last opponents, Sporting Kansas City, put the smackdown on our Cascadia brethren to the north the Vancouver Whitecaps 6-0. There were two red cards to the ‘Caps as Yordi Reyna and Efrain Juarez were both sent off by VAR in the 40th minute following a somewhat typical in game melee caused by a Kendall Waston tackle on Roger Espinoza. The Seattle Sounders do not start their northern portion of Cascadia Cup until their 19th game of the season on July 21st when they host the Whitecaps.
Next week will see the Sounders travel to LA to open LAFC’s brand new stadium. Bob Bradley’s club finish their six game road trip to open the season this weekend with a 10 AM match in Montreal against the Impact (ESPN+, 10 AM, Saturday).
