Major Link Soccer: Wayne Rooney ready for D.C. United move

MLS mid-week clashes, US Open Cup games and some NWSL games as well.

That 5-4-1 formation for the Sounders seemed to work out just fine against Toronto FC last night. It worked so well that it led to this for the first time in 2018.

Speaking of that Sounders and Toronto rematch, I just can’t stop watching this lovely sequence that led to the Sounders first goal of the game.

Ichiro retired (or whatever) last week. Appropriately, Peter Gammons has an Ichiro tribute (behind the paywall) at The Athletic today. It’s about how dedicated Ichiro is to the craft of baseball, and opens with an anecdote from Barry Bonds. Ichiro: “Who The Fuck Is Tom Brady?”


The Sounders weren’t the only team playing last night, actually there were four other games. First up was Atlanta United FC hosting Sporting Kansas City. Brad Guzan took a red card in the first half and Sporting won 2-0 playing up a man for the entire second half.

The Chicago Fire were able to hold off the Montreal Impact and win 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Columbus Crew SC took down the Philadelphia Union 1-0 at home on yet another goal from Gyasi Zardes.

LAFC took down Minnesota United 2-0 as they remain unbeaten The Banc.

As Sounders fans, we may want to forget that first game at LAFC’s new stadium. However, take a look at this video put together by COPA 90 regarding their first ever home game.

Sounds like Wayne Rooney is ready to make a move to MLS. He has reportedly told Everton he wants to join D.C. United during the Summer Transfer window.

US Open Cup

Here’s a quick run down of a few of the 2018 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup action last night.


The Houston Dash acquired Alyssa Chapman from the North Carolina Courage for two second-round 2019 NWSL College Draft picks in exchange for their 2019 natural first-round pick.

The Dash battled back and tied the Portland Thorns FC 1-1 on Wednesday night.

The other game between of the night saw Utah Royals FC and the Orlando Pride battle to a 0-0 draw. It’s be a rough year for the Laura Harvey led Royals.


The United States U20s have two games coming up in the next week against Honduras. Ten players from the USL were called up and Sam Rogers is lone Sounders representative.
