This would be the perfect time for Clint Dempsey to make history

Dempsey will tie Fredy Montero for the most goals in Sounders history with his next strike and is facing his favorite team to score against.

There’s something about playing the Portland Timbers that seems to bring out the absolute best in Clint Dempsey. In 10 appearances against the Seattle Sounders’ southern rivals, Dempsey has scored nine goals, five of which have come in Portland. Six of his nine goals have either tied the game or given the Sounders the lead.

Last year, his final-minute equalizer allowed the Sounders to start an 12-match unbeaten run that essentially secured them a spot in the playoffs. It also started a run of six games in which Dempsey scored seven goals and had two assists.

With the Sounders still off to their worst start in franchise history and Dempsey yet to score, now would be a particularly good time for him to conjure up some of his old magic. Adding just a bit more to that narrative is that this will be the 100th meeting in Sounders-Timbers history and his next goal will tie him with Fredy Montero for the club’s all-time regular-season scoring record.

“He’s a big-time player,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said, while not quite confirming whether or not Dempsey would start. “And these are big games.”
