Three Big Storylines:

  1. Saturday starts the MLS weekend with a good matchup on Univision featuring FC Dallas hosting the LA Galaxy. Since making his stunning debut for the Galaxy, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not been able to continue lifting the play of the Galaxy’s mismatched roster. They travel to Dallas on a three game losing streak featuring home losses to Atlanta United and the New York Red Bulls followed up by an away loss at the Houston Dynamo. FC Dallas have had a relatively strong start to the season with a 3-1-4 (W-L-D) record mostly avoiding losses but much too many draws mixed in for manager Óscar Pareja.
  2. The big news of the week in MLS is that D.C. United is looking to add Wayne Rooney in the summer transfer window. With a shiny new Soccer Specific Stadium opening up in the city, this might be a good move to signal new ambition at the club going forward. But in the interim, United are on the second game of an eight game road trip leading up to the unveiling of Audi Field on July 14th as they head to Utah to take on Real Salt Lake. With only five points from seven played (0.71 ppg), United are in danger of being practically out of the playoff picture before they open their stadium with a back loaded home schedule. RSL are on a two game losing streak but have won their last three home matches beating the New York Red Bulls, Vancouver Whitecaps and Colorado Rapids.
  3. Sunday sees an MLS national TV triple header on Mother’s Day (happy Mother’s day to two of my most loyal readers in my mom and my wife (her first)) that starts with the best game first as the Seattle Sounders travel down I-5 to play the Portland Timbers, followed up by Orlando City hosting Atlanta United and finishing with LAFC hosting New York City FC. MLS really could not pick a better slate for the mother’s out there that just want to sit in front of a TV for 6 hours on a Sunday afternoon. Atlanta lead the Eastern Conference with a 7-2-1 record but Orlando City are on a franchise record six game winning streak and sport a 6-2-1 record on the year.

From a Sounders Point of View:

With the World Cup break looming on the horizon the Sounders inexplicably have a bye next weekend and do not play again until May 26 as they host the seemingly annual Memorial Day weekend home match. This year that game will be against Real Salt Lake which is the first of a home and home against RSL as the Sounders travel to Utah for a June 2nd game. It might be worth keeping an eye on that D.C. United match against RSL (Saturday, 6PM, ESPN+).
