Three Big Storylines:
- FOX has an over the air TV double header on Saturday morning that warms up with the FA Cup Final from Wembley featuring Manchester United playing Chelsea. Then the main event follows as LAFC travel up the coast to play the Portland Timbers. Again, these games are on broadcast FOX, not Fox Sports 1. The Timbers are on a four game winning streak since starting the season with two points from five played. Despite a fine for embellishment in last week’s game against the Seattle Sounders the Timbers will be at full strength as Samuel Armenteros was only fined and Sebastian Blanco was not given a yellow card for his Chucky mask celebration that would have been relevant after his 96’ yellow card. LAFC has 20 points and 22 goals scored in their first 10 games played as an MLS expansion team and will look to break the Timbers bunker.
- Sunday sees the traditional Saturday Univision game moved to Sunday on UniMas and features the Chicago Fire hosting the Houston Dynamo. The second national TV game of the day will be Atlanta United hosting the New York Red Bulls. Red Bulls keepers Luis Robles has been ruled out with a knee injury, ending his all-time MLS record of 183 consecutive regular season starts (201 including the playoffs). Robles has played every minute of his streak that started on September 29, 2012. Never used Ryan Meara will deputize for Robles against Atlanta’s potent attack.
- Bonus Monday MLS! Monday is a holiday in Canada as it is Victoria Day hounouring Queen Victoria’s birthday. In Quebec it is known as National Patriotes Day. Montreal is in Quebec and the LA Galaxy are visiting. So happy National Patriotes Day for MLS in Canada. The game kicks off at Noon on ESPN+ with the Galaxy on a four game losing streak and only three points in their last six played. Before coming to MLS the Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic had never lost three games in a row in his long profession career. Montreal’s struggles this year have been overshadowed by fellow Canadian and MLS Cup winner Toronto FC’s struggles that have absorbed all the headlines but the Impact have lost six of their last seven matches with only a 4-2 home win over the New England Revolution breaking up the dire results.
From a Sounders Point of View:
The Sounders have a bye.
Just get healthy. With only 16 outfield players projected to be available for next Saturday’s home game against Real Salt Lake, the team is in danger of fielding a short bench with another injury.
