At least officially, Nicolas Lodeiro remains in the running to make Uruguay’s final 23-man roster that will go to the World Cup. How long that’s the case, though, remains to be seen.
A supposed list of the 23 players going to Russia started circulating on Tuesday, followed by an official-looking treatment on Wednesday. Lodeiro’s name did not appear on either list. In a video that came out today, though, Lodeiro can be seen training with the team in Montevideo, Uruguay. Various reports have suggested Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez could make an announcement as early as Thursday or Friday, but he has until June 4 to make a final decision.
If Lodeiro were cut by Thursday, it’s at least within the realm of possibility that he could be back in the United States by Friday and potentially be available for selection on Saturday when the Sounders play at Real Salt Lake. That would also likely be highly dependent on the state of Lodeiro’s injured foot, which kept him out of recent Sounders games and might be why he wouldn’t be going to Russia.
