(Author’s note: Your MLS Weekend Gamethread returns after your author took Memorial Day weekend off, hopefully you enjoyed your long weekend. I took an 11 month old (car) camping, which was an adventure.)

Three Big Storylines:

  1. Friday night MLS on national TV in Canada opens the weekend play as the Vancouver Whitecaps travel to the Rocky Mountains to play the Colorado Rapids (6 PM, ESPN+). The Rapids are on a six game losing streak while the Whitecaps are coming into the game off an entertaining yet unproductive four match draw streak resulting from three 2-2 and a 3-3 draw. Anthony Hudson’s squad is facing an early season crisis being outscored 15-4 over their six game losing streak and questions are being asked if there are deeper problems with the Rapids than just a new manager.
  2. Following the USMNT friendly in Dublin with Ireland, ESPN2 is showing a soccer doubleheader on Saturday as the LA Galaxy head to Cascadia to take on the Portland Timbers. Portland are on a six game winning streak and get an unneeded break as they host a Galaxy team that played FC Dallas on Wednesday while the Timbers are on full rest having played in Colorado last weekend. The Galaxy will be without Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos and, Ola Kamara who are with their national teams to add to their short rest woes and might end up leaning on Zlatan Ibrahimovic to create his own chances.
  3. The best game of the MLS weekend might very well be LAFC heading to Frisco to play FC Dallas (Saturday, 5PM, ESPN+). After a hot start, LAFC have only two points from their last three played but still boast a respectable 1.75 PPG with 21 points from 12 played. However FC Dallas get a big break as LAFC will be without Laurent Ciman, Omar Gaber, Marco Urena and Carlos Vela on international duty. For an expansion team that was not very deep to begin with, that is a lot of talent to make up for. FC Dallas are on a five game unbeaten run earning 11 points over that span that started with a 1-1 draw at LAFC and have no international absences and no notable injuries.

From a Sounders Point of View:

In what is sadly becoming a recurring theme in this space the only goal for the weekend (besides scoring a few) is to get three points. The Sounders need to find a way to accrue some points before scoreboard watching begins.

However, I am not the Sounders. So Draws everywhere please. Colorado v Vancouver, tie it up. Galaxy at Timbers, return of Draw City! Houston at Montreal, let the Canadians win one, eh? FC Dallas has a schedule win over LAFC? Not so fast, draw that match. Sporting Kansas City hosting the United version of Minnesota? A draw there might be a stretch, but see what you can do?
