Three Big Storylines:
- You may be asking why the USMNT is playing this game? Well it is a FIFA date mostly designated for warm up matches en route to getting ready for the World Cup in Russia. So US Soccer and interim manager Dave Sarachan has turned this three match set of games into a youth movement. The team that beat Bolivia 3-0 on Memorial Day had an average age of 22 years and 286 days while this squad is 23 years and 102 days. 18 year olds Josh Sargent and Timothy Weah became the 2nd and 4th youngest players to score for the USMNT in the Bolivia game with 25 year old Walker Zimmerman also scoring his first national team goal.
- DeAndre Yedlin has the most caps of any player on the squad with 50, followed by fellow new addition to the roster Bobby Wood at 37. Eighteen players on the USMNT roster have five or fewer caps. Kenny Saief has also joined the team in Ireland after not making the trip to the States for Bolivia. Saief just finalized a move to Belgian giants Anderlecht and will be looking forward to some Europa League Thursday nights in the coming season.
- For Ireland this match is a send off game for their longtime defender John O’Shea, who will earn his 117th cap today and retire from the national team after making his debut on August 15th, 2001. Ireland missed out on a trip to Russia after falling to Denmark by an aggregate score of 5-1 in the European playoff round.
From a Sounders Point of View:
Cristian Roldan reportedly had the option of joining the team for this and next Saturday’s match in Lyon against France. But he turned down the opportunity to help out a short handed Seattle Sounders team. If you want to spend your afternoon watching soccer, you can watch the USA in Ireland followed by the LA Galaxy traveling to Portland also on ESPN2 then transition into one of the four MLS matches that kickoff at 4:30 all leading up to the Seattle Sounders in Utah at 6:30 to take on Real Salt Lake. Day Planned!
