Sounders at Real Salt Lake, quick recap: Seattle shuts self out again

Baird and Silva score as RSL wins 2-nil

MLS: Seattle Sounders at Real Salt Lake Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

RECAP: There were a few moments when the Sounders looked like a team that could score, but they were rare enough. Salt Lake finished Seattle off when Stefan Frei left his net during a late set-piece opportunity. He nearly connected on a header to threaten Rimando’s goal, but instead RSL sprung out and slipped it into the empty net.

Victor Rodriguez earned his first minutes, replacing the re-injured Will Bruin. In his 26 minutes Rodriguez looked effective and reminded the team what he’s capable of doing, slipping effective throughballs that didn’t result in goal opportunities.

Bruin’s injury status isn’t known at this time.

Seattle plays midweek in US Open Cup action at Sacramento Republic at 8:00 p.m. on June 6. Their next MLS match is Saturday June 9 at 7 p.m. hosting D.C. United.

UPDATE 57’: After absorbing pressure for the most of the match the Seattle Sounders defense gave up their goal. Stefan Frei’s excellent save deflected to the goal right back to Real Salt Lake’s Corey Baird, who headed the shot perfectly to open the scoring.

RSL used an first half sub to insert Saucedo for the injured Plata. Schmetzer inserted Harry Shipp for Jordy Delem at half and after the goal Lamar Neagle entered for Kelvin Leerdam.

Hope lies on the horizon. With Will Bruin and Victor Rodriguez quite likely to be in the 18, Osvaldo Alonso’s availability approaching and Nicolas Lodeiro returning to the squad there is reason for Seattle Sounders fans to look to the future with positive eyes. They still must face Real Salt Lake before the starting lineup is close to full strength, a Real Salt Lake team that stole a win just a week ago.

Now on the road the Sounders must find a goal to find a chance. It’s the only way they can nab three points and start their long climb to the red line. Today’s match offers opportunities as RSL played midweek and will be without their best attacking player. Opportunity must become reality, though.

Absences: Injury, international duty and suspension

Seattle: Osvaldo Alonso, Will Bruin and Victor Rodriguez are listed as questionable. Handwalla Bwana and Jordan Morris are out. Gustav Svensson and Roman Torres are away on World Cup duty. Nicolas Lodeiro was just cut from the Uruguay squad today, and will not return to the Sounders for this match.

RSL: No players are listed as questionable. The following players are listed as out — Tony Beltran, Jordan Allen, Shawn Barry, Demar Phillips, Alex Horwath, Luke Mulholland. Albert Rusnak is on international duty.

Marcelo Silva, Nouhou Tolo, Osvaldo Alonso are all two yellow cards away from an accumulation suspension.

Kevin Stott is the center referee. His video assistant is Alex Chilowicz
