Supporters have had plenty of fun goal-scoring celebrations from Seattle Sounders and Seattle Reign players over the year — backflips, shoe phones, shoe shines, scuba dives, and more! Those celebrations become even more joyous when they take place against your rival, and Seattle has had plenty of reasons to jump for joy against Portland.
Today, we look back at matches that included two key rivalry elements: a brace for our stars and some fun celebrations to cap off a victory.
Of note: there is likely one celebration in particular that you’ll feel is missing from this list. Don’t worry, that will pop up later in the countdown.
Pride in the Crest
In 2017, after a mild first 45 minutes of play, Reign FC looked to be heading into halftime scoreless against Portland. But just before the whistle, Emily Sonnett got what looked to be a simple ball along the backline, and turned to play it back to goalkeeper Adrianna Franch. Not seeing Megan Rapinoe charging forward, Sonnett sent a soft pass to Franch, who tried to come out for a last-ditch clearance. Rapinoe got there first — sliding on the turf to tap the ball into the left corner.
Rapinoe finished the play by pointing first to Sonnett and then to the Reign crest on her jersey before running toward the sideline to celebrate with Laura Harvey and the bench. There’s nothing better than showing some club-team pride.

That was all the momentum Seattle needed heading into half, and Reign FC would go on to win 2-0 thanks to another Rapinoe goal.

Barrett the Ballerina
In August 2014, with their offense going through a rough patch, the Seattle Sounders traveled down to Providence Park for an important Cascadia rivalry match. The Hydra returned in full force this match, with Obafemi Martins scoring two goals, Clint Dempsey getting one after sprinting nearly the full length of the field, and Chad Barrett scoring a goal in his third consecutive MLS game.
After scoring, Barrett did ... this. He later confirmed the ballerina dance was the result of a fantasy football league bet with friends. Either way, we enjoyed the goal, the win, and the random ballet jig.
Other memorable moments from this match include Brad Evans whizzing past DP defender Liam Ridgewell ...
Dempsey’s 80-yard sprint to get goal number two for Seattle ...
And Martins getting through approximately six defenders to seal the win.
That sure was fun.
