Quick recap: After a physical affair where Seattle Reign had the better chances, but couldn’t get anything behind Portland Thorns goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, the goal finally came for the home side in the 89th minute. Megan Rapinoe collected the ball on the left side of the pitch, took it endline, and send a perfect pass across goal. Jodie Taylor had acres of space, and just had to get her leg on it to redirect it into goal. It would be all Reign FC would need to pick up three points.
The Cascadia battle continues on Saturday evening, as Seattle Reign FC and Portland Thorns FC kick off at 7 PM PT at Memorial Stadium. The game will stream on go90 for U.S. fans, and the NWSL website and app for those watching from abroad.
With the teams sitting in third and fourth, respectively, the points on the line are crucial in this rivalry match. Seattle and Portland are both coming off draws in their mid-week match and will be hungry for momentum — especially given how close the points are between second and seventh place on the league table (just 5 points separate those teams).
This is the only home match for Seattle against the Thorns and it comes after defeating Portland in thrilling fashion in May, when a late Rumi Utsugi goal secured a 3-2 win for Seattle. Another win tonight is certainly possible, especially if Reign FC is able to settle in and play the kind of game they want: building from the back, meaningful possession, and moving the ball around to create space. If they do that well, the goals will come. And hopefully three points are right behind them.
