Trophies are cool, and on Wednesday night at 8:00 PM in Sacramento’s Papa Murphy’s Park the Seattle Sounders begin their third trophy quest of 2018. They fell short of the CONCACAF Champions League, are almost certainly out of the Supporters’ Shield hunt, but can, with good fortune, win their fifth ever Lamar Hunt US Open Cup title. That fifth Dewar Cup would tie them with Bethlehem Steel and Maccabi Los Angeles as the historical leaders. Active clubs Chicago Fire and Sporting Kansas City also hold four Open Cup titles.
Step one is a Fourth Round match against Sacramento Republic FC. Republic are third in the USL West and third overall, with a 7-3-3 +4 record. Sounders assistant coach Preki is the former Sacramento coach and S2 forward/midfielder David Estrada also played for the Northern California side.
