Final, 1-1: Finishing up a three-match road trip the Seattle Sounders managed to steal a draw against Major League Soccer’s best team. Seattle struck first (45’) when Lodeiro scored from the spot after Harry Shipp’s shot was deflected by an Atlanta arm. United managed to draw level just after the match restarted when Josef Martinez equalized.

Brian Schmetzer’s side had to hold on to the draw while playing 10 v 11 after Jordan McCrary was sent off for two cautions. His subs at that point were all about defense as Leerdam entered for Shipp; Svensson entered for Marshall, who may be injured; and Alonso closed the match out replacing Rodriguez.

Update 48’: On a cross into the box Stefan Frei left his line early but not far enough to punch out the cross. Josef Martinez leveled the match 1-1 with a floating header that went into the net. Martinez now has 19 goals just 21 games into the season.

Update 45’: Harry Shipp continues to make things happen. His 43’ shot from distance deflected out of touch by Franco Escobar’s arm. The ensuing penalty kick was barely a highlight for Nicolas Lodeiro, as Brad Guzan touched the weak effort. The ball trickled into the goal to give Seattle Sounders a 1-0 lead late in the first half.

Entering half the Sounders edge Atlanta in shots taken and passing in the final third.

Going by recent form FOX’s feature MLS match should be two comparable sides. Hosts Atlanta United are 3-1-2 in their last six, while the Seattle Sounders are 2-2-2. If one is to think that the Sounders are threw their rough start their 4 points in their last two matches are another positive sign.

But there are reasons why FOX is showing this match immediately after the World Cup Final between France and Croatia. Many of these reasons have to do with the potent Atlanta offense (Josef Martinez is the league leader in goals scored with 18); their massive crowds that upstaged the crowds in Seattle; and America’s most famous soccer player, who didn’t travel.

Absences: Injury, international duty and suspension

Seattle: Handwalla Bwana and Jordan Morris remain out. Kelvin Leerdam (right hamstring strain) and Roman Torres (left ankle sprain) are listed as questionable. Clint Dempsey did not travel due to a sore groin.

Five Stripes: Greg Garza and Darlington Nagbe are out

Osvaldo Alonso, Jordy Delem and Romario Williams will miss their next match if they see yellow in this one. The following players are two yellows away from accumulation — Miguel Almiron, Franco Escobar, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, Jeff Larentowicz, Chris McCann, Nouhou, Cristian Roldan.

Baldomero Toledo is the center referee. His video assistant is Alex Chilowicz.
