University of Akron men’s soccer: Young, talented Zips look to continue tradition of excellence
There’s an expectation at the University of Akron for the men’s soccer team regardless of what happened the season before. Standouts may leave and players may graduate, but the one thing that stays the same is that the Zips stand above almost everyone else on the national landscape. Last season, Stuart Holthusen (12 goals, 3 assists), Sam Gainford (10, 5) and Joao Moutinho were arguably the big three that brought a Mid-American Conference Tournament title and trip to the College Cup to Akron during an 18-4-2 season. Holthusen and Gainford were lost to graduation along with Paul Belena, Manuel Cordeiro, Niko de Vera and Nate Shultz. Joao Moutinho was taken No. 1 in the MLS Super Draft by Los Angeles FC and was joined by de Vera (New York Red Bulls), Shultz (LA Galaxy) and Holthusen (Portland Timbers) in the draft with Nick Hinds headed to the Seattle Sounders of the USL.
