Most of the results around the league over the weekend went the way that the Seattle Sounders wanted, up until the final whistle in their own match as they lost to the LA Galaxy. Kinnear’s team pressed high so that their lack of defense didn’t show often, and their strong attacking core spent their energy in Seattle’s defensive third. The 3-0 scoreline was their worst result since the March 18 loss at Dallas.
As the losses that started the season injuries were a factor, but they were not the only factor. Brian Schmetzer attempted to make up for the short rest and key injuries by starting a 4-4-2. His defense failed him and the attack sputtered.
Smith made two egregious errors that lead to the penalty. First he gave the ball away and then he tripped over his own feet as Ola Kamara blew past him. Smith fell on top of Kamara. If that few seconds of action wasn’t bad enough he pulled his right hamstring minutes later and required a substitution. It wasn’t as if Smith was playing well, but Nouhou is second choice now, and it showed.
Will Bruin misses a clean header
It’s the type of miss that every striker wants back. Bruin made the perfect run. The cross was perfect. Bruin was open and didn’t even get it on the net. In the reality where Seattle scores that goal the dynamic of the match changes.
Defense doesn’t play to the whistle
The current command is to keep the flag down on questionable offside calls. The AR did that as the Galaxy scored their second goal. They had two questionable passes during the sequence, but it was the first that ended Seattle’s ability to defend the rest. Both Torres and Leerdam froze, expecting a whistle. Galaxy were quicker to pickup on the fact that there was no whistle and using deft passing gave Kamara an easy goal.
