The details of Wednesday’s series of announcements involving the Tacoma Rainiers, Seattle Sounders and Reign FC about the future of soccer in the South Sound are finally public. S2 will have a new name and identity — Tacoma Defiance — a name and logo that points to Tacoma as the home of the Sounders’ USL Championship squad, the top of their developmental organization.
Reign FC will move to Tacoma and join the Defiance at Cheney Stadium, bidding farewell to Seattle after an eventful five-year stay at Memorial Stadium. The team also announced new ownership partners, further securing their long-term future in the region.
Part of the “series of announcements” was also related to the Heidelberg/Davis Stadium project, which is currently undergoing review. The land nestled between Foss High School, Cheney Stadium and 19th Street/Fred Meyer will likely be the future home of the Reign and Defiance. Populous is the architect and design firm. They’ve worked on 105 stadiums globally, including one of the 15 soccer-specific stadia in North America that are not shared with an MLS team. There are 36 teams in the USL Championship for 2019, with nine of them having some level of MLS ownership.
