RSL punched their ticket by beating the Portland Timbers in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday. A late goal from Jefferson Savarino proved to be the difference.
RSL held 58 percent of possession and out shot the Timbers 16-12, but the Timbers were more than game. After a slow start that saw them fall behind 1-0, the Timbers got back into the game through a Dairon Asprilla goal just after halftime. From there, they had the bulk of the better chances and forced Nick Rimando into several big saves.
This will mark the third time the Sounders have faced RSL in the playoffs, but the first time since 2012. All three meetings have come in the Western Conference semifinals and the teams have split their previous series. RSL beat the Sounders 3-2 on aggregate in 2011. The Sounders beat RSL 1-0 on aggregate the following season. Unlike those meetings, this will be a one-game affair.
The Sounders and RSL split their meetings this season with each team winning their home game. The Sounders won 1-0 on April 6 and are now 10-3-3 all-time against RSL at CenturyLink Field.
