What they said: Sounders advance to MLS Cup after shocking the world

The Seattle Sounders advanced to their third MLS Cup after upsetting Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium, and it must be said that the Sounders were good value for their victory. Given slim odds by just about everyone outside of Seattle, the Sounders put on an impressive display against the Supporters’ Shield winners, stifling the likely MVP and displaying cold, lethal finishing in the final third.

So unexpected was the Sounders performance that the reaction online ranged from euphoria (Sounders fans and players), to shock (pundits) to saltiness (pundits and those located about 174.4 miles south). We’ve collected some of our favorite reactions for you to enjoy.

SOUNDERS:

We have to start with the team, of course.

Brad Smith:

Jordan Morris:

Raul Ruidiaz:

Stefan Frei

Chad Marshall:

Russell Wilson and Ciara are basically Sounders, right?

Coach Brian Schmetzer:

There were some great responses to that one...

Brad Evans

Stefan Frei

Speaking of Schmetzer he was being rightfully fêted for leading the team to a third MLS Cup appearance in four years.

Coaches around the league recognize what a great job Schmetzer has done.

PUNDITRY:

Maybe the Sounders shouldn’t have been listed as such big underdogs, considering the talent they put on the field.

Given LAFC’s historical (regular) season, Alexi Lalas provides appropriate kudos.

Grant Wahl wonders if the failure of No. 1 seeds to make it to MLS Cup will have any impact on the revamped playoff format.

The answer is “no.” If you’re going to have playoffs, you’re going to have upsets.

In the last matchup in LA, it was fair to say that LAFC absolutely dominated the midfield in cruising to a 4-1 victory. Herculez Gomez gives Gustav Svensson plaudits for his performance dominating the midfield Tuesday.

Bobby Warshaw hasn’t tweeted in a week. He appears to prefer long form writing. His story previewing the game...didn’t go over very well. After the game, Brian Schmetzer brought the smoke.

No you didn’t, Total Soccer Show, no you didn’t.

FANS/MEMES:

Some top-notch stuff online.

And some not-so-top-notch fan behavior.

Spite is a powerful thing, and can make strange bedfellows.

AND FINALLY:

The Sounders will be training again on Friday at Starfire, should fans want a chance to watch the team prepare for MLS Cup. Tune in tonight at 5 p.m. Pacific to see if the Sounders get a chance to play for the title in front of the home fans.
