The Seattle Sounders advanced to their third MLS Cup after upsetting Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium, and it must be said that the Sounders were good value for their victory. Given slim odds by just about everyone outside of Seattle, the Sounders put on an impressive display against the Supporters’ Shield winners, stifling the likely MVP and displaying cold, lethal finishing in the final third.
So unexpected was the Sounders performance that the reaction online ranged from euphoria (Sounders fans and players), to shock (pundits) to saltiness (pundits and those located about 174.4 miles south). We’ve collected some of our favorite reactions for you to enjoy.
We have to start with the team, of course.

Speaking of Schmetzer he was being rightfully fêted for leading the team to a third MLS Cup appearance in four years.
Man, if you were an NFL coach and took your team to the Super Bowl 75% of the time, you’d be regarded as a god. @brianschmetzer has done the equivalent for the Sounders in MLS. What an amazing achievement! #MLSCupPlayoffs— James Woollard (@BritVoxUS) October 30, 2019
Brian Schmetzer, MLS head coach:— JD of JD & The Rod (@davisjsn) October 30, 2019
2016: MLS Cup title
2017: Western Conference title
2018: Conf semis, loss on pens
2019: Western Conference title, with final pending
Three finals in your four attempts as coach, in this league of all leagues is absolutely nuts. If, and it’s a big if, Seattle wins the cup, that’s 2 cups in 4 years. Dynasty? Hard to argue against that.— Steve Zakuani (@Zakuani11) October 30, 2019
Coaches around the league recognize what a great job Schmetzer has done.
#DCU Ben Olsen on if @SoundersFC's @BrianSchmetzer gets enough credit for the success of Seattle:— Emily Olsen (@EmilyTOlsen) October 30, 2019
"No, he doesn't. I think he has done a fantastic job there. I think the organization has done a great job since they’ve entered the league; good infrastructure."#MLSCupPlayoffs
Maybe the Sounders shouldn’t have been listed as such big underdogs, considering the talent they put on the field.
And just think about Seattle's lineup last night:— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) October 30, 2019

Given LAFC’s historical (regular) season, Alexi Lalas provides appropriate kudos.

Grant Wahl wonders if the failure of No. 1 seeds to make it to MLS Cup will have any impact on the revamped playoff format.
The MLS playoffs can be cruel, and the word "sidenote" probably is too. Fact is, LAFC played some of the best soccer we've ever seen in this league. Are we feeling any less bullish on the new playoff format when neither of the 2 best teams over 34 games makes the final? https://t.co/i6Etdhjlvq— Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) October 30, 2019
The answer is “no.” If you’re going to have playoffs, you’re going to have upsets.
In the last matchup in LA, it was fair to say that LAFC absolutely dominated the midfield in cruising to a 4-1 victory. Herculez Gomez gives Gustav Svensson plaudits for his performance dominating the midfield Tuesday.
I’ve been critical of Gustav Svensson in the past, but he put up one of the best playoff performances I’ve ever seen last night.— herculez gomez (@herculezg) October 30, 2019
He was an animal.
Dominated the LAFC midfield. #SoundersMatchday
Bobby Warshaw hasn’t tweeted in a week. He appears to prefer long form writing. His story previewing the game...didn’t go over very well. After the game, Brian Schmetzer brought the smoke.
I'm 99% sure that, in his postmatch interview, Brian Schmetzer said, "I'll let Bobby Warshaw tell me how I did it." I didn't imagine that, did I? -d— Total Soccer Show (@TotalSoccerShow) October 30, 2019
