Victor Rodriguez, Román Torres among Sounders whose options are declined

There will likely be a fair amount of turnover in the Seattle Sounders roster for 2020 after the team announced that only 18 players are currently under contract as of Wednesday. The Sounders elected to exercise just 4 of 10 contract options and they have three more players out of contract. Three MLS Cup starters, as well as MLS Cup MVP Victor Rodriguez, are among the players now out of contract.

Among the players whose options were declined was Román Torres. Fellow MLS Cup starters Kim Kee-hee and Brad Smith are out of contract and Smith’s loan from Bournemouth expired at the end of the season. Those moves were all largely expected.

Perhaps the most surprising announcement was that the Sounders declined to pick up Saad Abdul-Salaam’s option. Abdul-Salaam had seemingly established himself as a solid and versatile backup.

The release announcing the moves did note that the team is currently engaged in negotiations with several out-of-contract players.
