The MLS Cup Final is obviously a showcase of two of the best teams in the league, but it’s also an opportunity for the best referees to be shown off as well. This year the award for best ref in MLS went to Allen Chapman, and it looks like he will be rewarded with the center referee gig for the final. He’ll be joined by assistant referees Brian Dunn and Corey Rockwell; fourth official Rubiel Vazquez; VAR referee Edvin Jurisevic and assistant VAR officials Cameron Blanchard and Brian Poeschel.
Chapman has refereed two Seattle Sounders games this season. The first, coincidentally, was Seattle’s 3-2 win over Toronto in April. That game featured two yellow cards for the Sounders. A total of 19 fouls were called in that game, with a pretty even split of 10 fouls for Seattle and nine fouls for Toronto. The second match was Seattle’s 4-2 win over the New York Red Bulls in September. That was another evenly refereed game, with Seattle receiving two yellow cards to RBNY’s three cards. You can’t conclude much from just two games, but both of those matches featured a lot of goals and had the Sounders coming out victorious.
Chapman also refereed the 2017 MLS Cup final. Anybody remember what happened in that match? Just as well, I’m sure it was highly forgettable.
