While the report is still unconfirmed, it would make some sense. Peñarol is also rumored to be playing LAFC at Banc of California Stadium on Jan. 22, which would fulfill part of terms of Brian Rodriguez’s transfer last season. At the time, Peñarol had expressed some openness to that game being part of a mini-cup or playing a slate of games during their own preseason tour.
This would mark the second straight year that the Sounders have played a team from Uruguay during the preseason. Last year, they host Nicolas Lodeiro’s old team, Nacional, shortly before the start of the regular season. The Sounders would likely be looking at this game as a way of gearing up for Concacaf Champions League.
Nacional and Peñarol are the two biggest teams in Uruguay, and just faced each other in the country’s Clausura championship game on Wednesday night. Next Sunday they’ll face off again for the overall championship after Peñarol won the Apertura tournament earlier in the year.
