The confetti dust has just about settled here in Seattle, but the offseason is in full swing. This morning MLS announced every team’s home opener for the 2020 regular season. The Sounders will open the season at home on March 1st, taking on the recently rebranded Chicago Fire. The match is set to kick off at noon. The Sounders don’t feature in anyone else’s 2020 home opener, so we don’t know any more of their schedule at this point.
The Sounders are 6-5-0 in MLS season openers, with 10 of the 11 matches at CenturyLink Field. The Rave Green boast a 7-4-0 record in home openers. They lost their only away season opener in 2017 to the Houston Dynamo. Seattle has a decent record against Chicago — 8-2-4 against the Fire all time, and undefeated at home with a record of 4-0-2.
This match will not be the first match of the Sounders’ 2020 campaign. They’ll have already played two Concacaf Champions League matches by this point, hopefully with more on the horizon. The schedule for that tournament will be nailed down following the draw on December 9th.
