In 2019 and forward the Seattle Sounders will be carbon neutral. This effort involves initiatives that includes reducing the organization’s impact as well as carbon offsets. Sounders are calculating their impact via Sustainable Business Consulting and purchasing offsets through the Evergreen Carbon Capture (ECC) program of Forterra, per the press release. The formal launch event is a tree planting ceremony with Brian Schmetzer on February 24.
For a team that travels around the United States and Canada for its matches from the far corner of the contiguous states the carbon offsets will be significant, but they aren’t stopping there. Their scouts also travel the globe, also creating a large quantity of offsets needed. And, in a surprising bit of news, the Sounders and ECC even included fan travel as part of their offset calculation.
The ECC has 82 planting areas around Puget Sound at this time. The initial Sounders planting is at Point Rediscovery on Hamm Creek in Burien, and is open to all on Sunday, February 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Seattle Sounders and Tacoma Defiance players will join coach Schmetzer at the planting as well.
By teaming up with the ECC program the Sounders’ offsets will result in more of “the bluest skies you’ve ever seen.. in Seattle, and the hills the greenest green... in Seattle.” At SoundersFC.com/Sustainability you can read more about the extensive offset and sustainability programs that the team is conducting.
