The Seattle Sounders Academy U17s are having a historic run in this year’s GA Cup. Since the addition of international teams to the tournament the Sounders have only played in the top division — known now as the Champions division — once before. In 2014 they did not advance to the knockout round, finishing third in a group which included the New York Red Bulls, the Colorado Rapids and Flamengo.
They have blown past that result and will now face the Premier League’s West Ham United in the semifinals. The Sounders are the only non-European side left with La Liga’s Valencia CF and Prva HNL’s GNK Dinamo Zagreb facing off in the tournament’s other semifinal. If the Sounders best West Ham they will be the first MLS team to reach the final since Real Salt Lake lost to Stoke City in the 2014 final.
West Ham’s journey to the semis saw them win all three of their group games in regulation, beating Liga MX’s Club América 1-0, the Red Bulls 1-0 and FC Dallas 2-1. They then scored in extra-time of their quarterfinal match against the LA Galaxy to win 2-1 and set up their meeting with the Sounders.
The semi between between West Ham and the Sounders kicks off today at 1:30 PM PST. You can watch it on MLS’s Twitch channel or right here on Sounder at Heart at the top of this page. The other semifinal between Valencia and Dinamo Zagreb will be on the same stream at 3:05 PM PST so you can stick around if you want to get a look at the Sounders opponent in the final (or West Ham’s in the third-place match).
