Three Big Storylines
- Earlier this week I received a press release from Fox Sports public relations as they often do. Saturday’s game is on FOX as part of a doubleheader following the Borussia Dortmund at Bayern Munich match. But the release leads off with this: “For First Time Ever, FOX Sports Hosts MLS Pregame Show from Supporters Section”. Um, what could possibly go wrong? Rob Stone and Alexi Lalas will post up in the D.C. United Supporters Section for the broadcast as D.C. United host LAFC. No word in the press release if they have a backup studio location in case things go off the rails. They picked a great game for this gimmick, as both LAFC and D.C. United lead their respective conference and have yet to lose a game. Each team has one draw on the season to blemish their perfect record.
- Minnesota United finish up their five game road trip to start the season before they return home next weekend to open their brand new soccer specific stadium against New York City FC. This weekend, they are playing the red side of New York as they take on the New York Red Bulls. United have survived their early season road trip with a respectable two wins and two losses on the season, while Red Bulls are coming into this match losers of two in a row. It is their first two game losing streak in MLS play since 2017. Red Bulls are still looking to fill a Tyler Adams-sized hole in their roster and do not look like the team that came into the last week of the 2018 regular season with a chance to set the all time MLS points record.
- Two of the league’s early season strugglers match up on Saturday in San Jose as the Earthquakes, owners of zero points and a -12 goal differential through four matches, host the Portland Timbers, one point and -7 through the same four played. The Timbers are on game five of a 12 match away streak to open the season as they finish up their stadium expansion and will not play their first home match until June 1. Both teams were beaten by the LA clubs last weekend. San Jose suffered a 5-0 home drubbing while the Timbers were in Carson and lost a competitive game 2-1 to the LA Galaxy.
From a Sounders Point of View
Did you know that the Sounders play on Wednesday? They travel to Colorado for the first midweek match of the year before returning to Seattle to host an extremely hot Toronto FC team in a rematch of MLS Cups 2016 and 2017. TFC host the Chicago Fire Saturday at Noon while the Rapids are in Orlando at 4:30 on Saturday to play Orlando City SC.
