Three Reign FC players could feature in the two group-stage matches today, as Australia kicks off against Brazil in what will be a crucial match for both sides. Australia is coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to Italy, while Brazil is riding high after taking down Jamaica.

Goalkeeper Lydia Williams had a flubbed decision — to go after a ball in the box or not — that led to Italy’s game-winning goal. But Reign FC fans know that she’s one of the best in the world when she’s in the zone. Steph Catley got the start but was unable to have her usual impact on the left flanks, while Elise Kellond-Knight subbed into the match late.

After Australia and Brazil, it’s a battle between South Africa and China. Both teams fell in their opening matches, with South Africa scoring first but losing to Spain and China playing a physical match against Germany that they nearly held onto — but ultimately gave up a goal and lost 1-0.

What to Watch

  • Sam Kerr needs to get the ball. Australia tried to build out of the back against Italy, but they were stymied by Italy’s midfield. They’re going to need to find a way to break through and put Kerr in on goal. She’ll make magic happen.
  • Will the injured Marta play? For Brazil, it might not matter. Cristiane and Debinha shined without her in their opener.
  • Thembi Kgatlana was a force for South Africa in their World Cup opener, exposing Spain’s right side on many occasions. She was rewarded with a fantastic goal and could present trouble for China.
