The group stage continues in the Women’s World Cup and we remain blessed with thrilling matches and unexpected breakout performances. On Saturday, Group E teams play their second match of the tournament — with Netherlands facing off against Cameroon and Canada and New Zealand matching up.
This is an interesting group. Canada was the far better team but only managed to walk away with a 1-0 win against Cameroon. The Netherlands, meanwhile, were held scoreless for almost the entire match against New Zealand until they scored from a header in stoppage time.
What to Watch
- After both the Netherlands and Canada — two teams expected to emerge out of the group stage — managed uninspiring 1-0 wins, they have to show they have more offensive firepower in their Saturday games. The two sides won’t face off until their last group stage match, which makes goal differential today critical for both.
- Cameroon didn’t have too many looks on goal against Canada, but they were a team that worked their way into the group stage in the 2015 World Cup. Don’t count them out.
- New Zealand was so organized against the Netherlands. Former Reign FC centerback Rebekah Stott was one of the best players on the field for both teams, managing to pull off a backheel clearance in her own defensive box. But the Football Ferns let in a goal when they decided to bunker and try to see the game out. If they want any points, they’re going to have to keep that fight for 90 minutes.
