After a less-than-stellar lead-in, the United States finds themselves in exactly the position they hoped to be when the Gold Cup started. The American were the group stage’s best team, going 3-0-0 and outscoring opponents 11-0. They’ll face one of the tournament’s darlings — Curacao — in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Curacao, who used to compete as Netherlands Antilles, picked up their first-ever Gold Cup win when they beat Honduras 1-0 in the group stage and secured advancement when they tied Jamaica 1-1. Jurien Gaari scored the equalizer in the 93rd minute, allowing Curacao to leap over El Salvador to take second in the group via goal-difference.
For a country its size — the island has just 160,000 people — the national team has quite a few players in notable leagues. There are five players currently under contract for Eredivisie teams, one in the Belgian first division and another with Portuguese giants Nacional. All but three of their players are signed by professional teams outside their home country.
Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris are both available off the bench for the USA.
