FULL-TIME: Through 70-odd minutes, the Sounders had been arguably the better team and were leading 1-0. But after giving up a penalty in the 73rd minute, they quickly surrendered a second. In the end, they had to swallow a third consecutive loss. This one may have been the most painful, as the Sounders had done a lot right for the bulk of the game and were facing a team that on paper didn’t seem capable of staging a late comeback.

IMPACT 2, SOUNDERS 2: A few minutes after equalizing, the Impact stormed ahead when Omar Browne fed Saphir Tadir for a well-taken volley at the back post. It initially looked like it might be offside, but replays confirmed it was onside.

IMPACT 1, SOUNDERS 1: Just when it looked like the Sounders were starting to take control of the game a moment of relaxation left tied 1-1. Saphir Tadir got into the box off a nice entry pass and was taken down from behind by Kelvin Leerdam. It was an easy penalty call, and Tadir converted after sending Stefan Frei the wrong way.

IMPACT 0, SOUNDERS 1: Through 64 minutes, the Sounders had not managed a single shot. In the 65th, they found themselves leading 1-0. Harry Shipp drew a penalty near the top of the penalty area and Victor Rodriguez curled his attempt into the top corner.

HALFTIME: The Sounders and Impact went to halftime tied 0-0 with the teams combining for just two total shots, both by the Impact and neither on frame. The Sounders had some burgeoning chances on the counter-attack, but were never able to generate a genuinely dangerous chance.

The Seattle Sounders head to the French part of Canada to take on the Montreal Impact in their last match before the massive international break. Neither team will have a full bench and each is missing key players from their starting XI. But MLS is MLS and here we are.

Keys to the Game

  • Obviously, the massive talking point is the absences for both sides. Neither team will have their ideal lineups. How will each team deal with the situation?
  • The oddity of this game can kind of work in the Sounders’ favor. I’m not sure a “throw caution to the wind” approach is necessary, but Seattle is kind of playing with house money in this match.
