It seems like only yesterday that we were singing the praises of the United States as they romped over Japan in Vancouver to take the 2015 Women’s World Cup trophy and add a third star to their crest. Yet four years have passed, and today in Paris the 2019 edition of the tournament kicks off with a promise to be even more exciting and noteworthy than its predecessors. Which of the 24 teams will lift the trophy this year in Lyon?
As is customary, the host nation opens the tournament, and Les Bleues come into the game with huge expectations and a massive crowd backing them as they seek three points against South Korea. The big wild-card today will be the weather, as the Parc des Princes in Paris has been pelted with heavy rain and high winds throughout the day.
France is currently ranked 4th in the world, and defeated the USA 3-1 at home in a January friendly in a statement game and preview of the coming tournament. Much of their roster plays for Olympic Lyonnais, who bulldozed their way through UEFA Champions League play.
Although France is strongly favored to top Group A, Korea Republic is no pushover. The Taeguck Nangja are ranked 14th in the world and are anchored by Chelsea midfielder Ji So-yun. Their recent results on the international stage have been lackluster, but if they can stay composed and not falter under the pressure of a strongly pro-France crowd, they could surprise the hosts and the world.
