Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez and Sam Rogers have both been called into the United States U23 training camp from Sunday through June 16. This is the first time either player has joined the U23 team and Ocampo-Chavez, 17, will be the second youngest player in the camp. Only NYCFC’s Giovanni Reyna is younger. An early version of the roster had been leaked a couple days ago which did not include Rogers or Ocampo-Chavez.
Unlike the other youth teams, the U23’s do not have many tournaments in which to compete. Their main tournament is the Summer Olympics, the next of which will be contested in Tokyo, Japan in 2020. Concacaf's qualifying matches for that tournament will be held Oct. 3-15 in Costa Rica, with the top two teams advancing.
The Sounders organization has never before sent a player to the Olympics.
The USA will be trying to break an ignominious streak of missing the last two Olympics and three of the past four. Prior to 2000, the USA had never failed to qualify for men’s soccer at the Olympics.
