MLS: Philadelphia Union at New York City FC Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

LINEUPS: Playing their second match five days and in the middle of a three-games-in-eight-days run, Brian Schmetzer has opted for a very second-choice lineup. Although there are seven holdovers from the weekend win over the Whitecaps, most of the veterans are getting a day of rest. Alex Roldan, Jordy Delem, Nouhou and Xavier Arreaga are the new starters, with Gustav Svensson, Brad Smith and Kelvin Leerdam going to the bench and Danny Leyva being left off the gameday roster.

Two notable additions to the bench are Victor Rodriguez and Román Torres. Rodriguez is back from a hamstring strain while Torres returns from international duty. Nicolas Lodeiro has also joined the team in New York City, but was not added to the gameday roster.

NYCFC counters with a lineup that is largely unchanged from the one that beat the Philadelphia Union 4-2 on the weekend.

Following their win on Saturday night, the Seattle Sounders head east to the Big Apple to take on a surging New York City Football Club. NYCFC are currently on a 13-game unbeaten streak in all comps and have only suffered one loss this year. They’re also one of the four remaining teams in MLS to not have lost at home. Simply put, NYCFC is good and will be a tough competition for the Sounders.

Keys to the Game:

  • Maxi Morales is NYCFC’s version of Nico Lodeiro. Everything flows through him. Morales leads the league in assists with 11 and also has 5 goals. The Sounders will always need to have a man on his back and not let him turn into space. This might mean Jordy Delem starts over Danny Leyva.
  • Héber, the team’s leading goal scorer, being out for NYCFC will give the Sounders a defensive boost. Valentín Castellanos, his likely replacement for NYCFC, is coming off a near perfect performance against the Philadelphia Union.
  • The Sounders will have some reinforcements back. Nico Lodeiro should be back and it’s not a stretch to assume he’ll start if he is. We should also see Xavier Arreaga and/or Victor Rodriguez back in the starting XI.
