Three big storylines

  1. The US Open Cup played their semi-finals during midweek. We have an all United final this year as Atlanta United will play Minnesota United. Atlanta went on the road and beat Orlando City SC 2-0 to reach the final, While Minnesota beat the Portland Timbers at home 2-1. The final will be hosted by Atlanta on August 27th as each team will be looking to win their first US Open Cup title, and to also become the first MLS team to qualify for next season’s Concacaf Champions League.
  2. Wayne Rooney has decided to leave D.C. United after this season and return to Derby County in a player-coach role. While his career is clearly entering it’s twilight, he has definitely given a good showing of himself since joining the MLS club. This weekend will be your last chance to see a Zlatan Ibrahimovic versus Wayne Rooney matchup as D.C. United will host the LA Galaxy during the MLS National TV Sunday triple-header (TV listings down below). Coming into the weekend both clubs are sitting fifth in their respective conferences.
  3. The Houston Dynamo have quietly had an absolutely terrible summer. Their last eleven matches have featured three streaks of three losses sandwiched around two wins for a very unflattering LLLWLLLWLLL form guide. Six points from 11 played is definitely one way to see yourself below the red line, and that’s where we find the Dynamo as we get to the weekend. They are three points below FC Dallas for the last playoff spot. The Dynamo play at Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Union on Sunday (3 PM PT, ESPN+).

From a Sounders point of view

The New England Revolution were on an 11-match unbeaten run before they lost to LAFC last weekend. The Sounders just need to keep asserting Western Conference superiority over the Eastern Conference when they host the Revs on Saturday.

Also, we would like to see Wayne Rooney and D.C. United earn three points against the Galaxy on Sunday.
