FULL-TIME: Thanks to goals from Cristian Roldan and Raul Ruidiaz, as well as some tough defending, the Seattle Sounders retained the Cascadia Cup and moved into second place in the Western Conference by beating the Portland Timbers 2-1 on Friday.

TIMBERS 1, SOUNDERS 2: Diego Valeri pulled one back for the Timbers, hitting a free kick from about 22 yards that deflected off the wall and past Stefan Frei.

TIMBERS 0, SOUNDERS 2: Continuing a trend from the first half, Jordan Morris continued to feast on Zarek Valentin. Less than 2 minutes into the second half, Morris beat Valentin with a dribble to get to the endline and then set up Raúl Ruidíaz for a relatively easy finish.

33:00: Both supporters groups had remained largely silent during the first 33 minutes but erupted once the clock struck 33:00.

TIMBERS 0, SOUNDERS 1: Cristian Roldan got Seattle on the board first, putting away a cross from Jordan Morris that first deflected off Raúl Ruidíaz in the 21st minute.

LINEUPS: The Sounders will use a slightly new look lineup in arguably their biggest match of the year, deploying Cristian Roldan as a right midfielder and Jordy Delem at defensive midfielder. Gustav Svensson will line up next to Delem for the first time this season.

Things haven’t been going so well for the Seattle Sounders since they last played the Portland Timbers. The Sounders lost that game 2-1 and have gone 1-3-2 in their last six, including a four-game winless run that was extended with last week’s 2-2 tie against the LA Galaxy. The Timbers are coming off a loss in their last game, but are now 4-2-0 since last playing the Sounders.

Still, results around the league have been such that a win tonight could catapult the Sounders from fifth in the West to second. As if that weren’t enough, the winner of tonight’s game will claim the Cascadia Cup. The Timbers will win it if the game ends in a draw.

Keys to the Game:

  • Score first: It’s not that the Sounders are so unstoppable when they score first — they’re only 8-1-3 in those situations — it’s that the Timbers’ results are almost entirely predicated on that. When scoring first, Portland is 10-0-1; when conceding first they’re 1-10-3.
  • Don’t fall into the possession trap: As much as Brian Schmetzer wants his team to possess the ball, this is the wrong game and the wrong place to do it. The Sounders would be much better off looking for opportunities to counter and forcing the Timbers to carry the play.
  • Be patient: Playing entertaining soccer is a subject for another day. The Sounders need a result and there’s no reason for them to press the action. Defend well and wait for the right chance to pounce.
