MLS: Seattle Sounders FC at San Jose Earthquakes Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

FULL-TIME: Jordan Morris scored deep into stoppage time to lift the Seattle Sounders to a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday. With both teams playing with 10 men, Morris was able to out run Floria Jungwirth to a loose ball and then floated it past the onrushing goalkeeper. The win means the Sounders will claim the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs if they win their season finale.

With a playoff spot already secured, it might be tempting for the Seattle Sounders to look at tonight’s game at the San Jose Earthquakes as pure bonus. The reality is a bit more complicated. The Sounders have been in a bit a rut lately and are in desperate need of a positive performance heading into next weekend’s season finale.

Beyond that, the Sounders’ hold on a first-round home playoff game is a bit precarious. The Sounders need at least a point in this one to ensure that they control their own destiny in the regard and can still theoretically drop as low as seventh in the standings. The Sounders can still finish as high as No. 2, though, which would potentially give them a second home game and allow them to avoid LAFC until the conference finals.

Keys to the Game:

  • Treat the game like a playoff game. The Sounders need to put in a strong performance on the road.
  • Deal without Nico. It’s touch and go whether or not Nico Lodeiro will play, but even if he does play, he won’t be 100%. Seattle needs to create offense without their best.
  • Mark Wondo. San Jose has the leading goal scorer in MLS history. Chris Wondolowski has a knack for finding open spots in the box, especially on set pieces.
