Trademark and badge design filed for OL Reign

The redesigned badge carries over the shield, but little else from the old badge.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database was updated today with the first hints for Reign FC fans about the new branding of the team for the 2020 season. The listings, which were filed on Jan. 27 and published to the database overnight, are for “OL Reign” and feature a badge with a stylized lion beneath the name of the team in a font similar to the old Reign FC font, all surrounded by a shield that mirrors the original Seattle Reign FC design.

Trademark entries are traditionally submitted in black and white, so this gives us no indication of whether the team colors will be changing, and if so, what colors they will change to. We also have no indication as of yet regarding secondary badge or whether the stylized queen or crown will be retained in some fashion. It’s probably worth noting that Reign CEO Bill Predmore went as far as buying a URL for “Seattle Sirens FC” before deciding to go with “Seattle Reign,” so it’s at least possible this is some sort of placeholder rather than a change that’s guaranteed to happen.

This would be a substantial change from the prior primary badge and will surely be a point of discussion in the lead-up to the 2020 season. What do you think of the new badge?
