The 25-yard free kick was absolutely spectacular. Not only is it from a reasonably long distance, but it was taken from near dead center, which tends to be a more difficult spot to score from. The bend on the kick is absolutely gorgeous and is unlikely to be saved by any goalkeeper in the world.

This was Lodeiro’s fourth goal from a direct free kick since he joined the Sounders in 2016, which ties him with Fredy Montero for the most in the team’s MLS history. Notably, all four of Lodeiro’s goals have come in MLS play, while one of Montero’s came in CCL.
All of this got me wondering if Lodeiro’s goal was the best direct free kick in Sounders history. Here are the others I think deserve consideration:
Fredy Montero vs. Toronto FC (2011)
What makes it a contender: The setting. It’s from a comparable distance as Lodeiro’s, but more importantly it was a late game-winner on the road. The Sounders were also down a man.
Tyson Wahl vs. New England Revolution (2011)
What makes it a contender: The randomness, frankly. The sixth-year left back had never scored a MLS goal before this and did not score another during his 12 years in the league. Plus, he absolutely painted the upper-90 of the far corner. Just a spectacular hit.
Clint Dempsey vs. FC Dallas (2014)
Why it’s a contender: Distance. This is from a very similar spot as Lodeiro’s, but hit more on a straight line.
Clint Dempsey vs. Club America (2016)
What makes it a contender: Beauty and opponent. Dempsey’s strike against Club America is the kind of strike kids dream of on the training grounds. The bend is just gorgeous, it’s at home and against a massive opponent.
