FULL-TIME: The Sounders started well and were probably a bit unlucky to go into halftime trailing 2-1. But they came out flat in the second half and never recovered, falling 3-1 to the Colorado Rapids. The loss knocked them out of Supporters’ Shield contention and sets up a pair of virtual must-win matches next week to close out the season if they are to have a chance at grabbing the top seed in the Western Conference.

RAPIDS 3, SOUNDERS 1: Cole Bassett was left unmarked on a free kick and beat Stefan Frei on a close-range header off a pass from Jack Price.

RAPIDS 2, SOUNDERS 1: Keegan Rosenberry hit a perfect volley from about 22 yards out. The goal came after a corner kick that Kelvin Leerdam cleared well, but Rosenberry took it out of the air and hit it about as well as he could.

RAPIDS 1, SOUNDERS 1: Jordan Morris snapped four-game scoreless streak, finishing a Cristian Roldan cross at the back post. Roldan had worked a good two-man game with Kelvin Leerdam on the wing to work himself into space.

RAPIDS 1, SOUNDERS 0: After dominating much of the first 10 minutes, the Sounders gave up a goal on what seemed to be a harmless counter-attack. Sam Vines was able to drive in on the left side and float a cross that Shane O’Neill appeared well positioned to handle, but he misjudged it, allowing Andre Shinyashiki to head it inside the near post.

LINEUPS: There was just one change from the previous game with Shane O’Neill stepping in for Xavier Arreaga at centerback. More curiously, though, was just five outfield players being named to the bench. Joevin Jones was listed as questionable on the injury report, which may explain his absence, but it’s less clear why the other seven players were left behind.

There is one week left in the MLS regular season and the Seattle Sounders need to take 9 points from their three games this week. First up, they fly to Denver to take on the Colorado Rapids, who have just come back from an extended hiatus due to a COVID-19 outbreak. The Rapids are in poor form, having lost their last two matches, against Minnesota United and Sporting Kansas City.

The Sounders get the boost of having a relatively empty injury list. Brian Schmetzer has a lot of options at his disposal for tonight’s match, and it’ll be interesting to see what he does with the lineup.
