The scourge of corporate-named stadiums shows no sign of abating anytime soon, with the most recent example hitting very close to home. CenturyLink Field will soon be officially renamed Lumen Field after the corporation’s recent rebranding.
As we all know, however, just because a stadium has taken on a new corporate overlord doesn’t mean we have to follow along. No — we have the ability, nay, the duty! to come up with our own nickname for the place we choose to watch sports.
While there have been quite a few possibilities already thrown around, there’s one thing I think we can all agree on: “The Lu” is an awful thing to call it. Not only is it derivative of one of the Seahawks’ NFC West rival’s former hometowns, it also is a term our English friends use for the bathroom. Teams as consistently excellent as the Sounders and Seahawks do not want to play in a stadium playfully referred to as a toilet.
I should also say that I’m very aware that Emerald City Supporters have been calling the stadium “Royal Brougham Park” regardless of sponsor for quite some time. I love the name, but it’s been around long enough without catching on that I’m skeptical it will ever do so at a fanbase-wide level.
With all that said, what do you think you’ll be calling it?
