Alejandro Pozuelo beat out Nicolas Lodeiro (third) and Jordan Morris (fourth) to win the 2020 MLS MVP vote. Diego Rossi finished second in voting, actually winning the player block.
While there was some belief that having both Lodeiro and Morris attracting MVP votes could cost one of them the award, in the end it does not seem to have made much difference. The combined vote share of the two Sounders would have left them with about 19% of the total vote, which theoretically could have vaulted one of them into second but still would have fallen considerably short of Pozuelo’s 35.35%, who was the overwhelming pick of media (48.19%).
MVP voting
MLS MVP | Player % | Club % | Media % | Final % |
---|---|---|---|---|
MLS MVP | Player % | Club % | Media % | Final % |
Alejandro Pozuelo (TOR) | 20.15% | 37.72% | 48.19% | 35.35% |
Diego Rossi (LAFC) | 22.77% | 13.16% | 17.48% | 17.80% |
Nicolás Lodeiro (SEA) | 6.15% | 14.91% | 10.66% | 10.58% |
Jordan Morris (SEA) | 13.54% | 7.02% | 4.90% | 8.49% |
Andre Blake (PHI) | 4.77% | 5.26% | 4.69% | 4.91% |
Perhaps most interestingly, Morris attracted more than double Lodeiro’s support from fellow players. Morris finished third among players. Lodeiro’s biggest pool of support came from club officials, where he finished second.
Still, this was the best MVP showing for a Sounders player since 2014 when Obafemi Martins finished second to Robbie Keane. The only other time that a Sounder finished in the Top 5 of MVP voting was in 2011 when Mauro Rosales finished fifth.
