Right before the playoffs started the Seattle Sounders announced that they had a first-team player test positive for Covid-19. Tonight, during the press conference following the emotional 3-2 victory over Minnesota United in the Western Conference final, Gustav Svensson confirmed that he was the player who tested positive. He made his comeback in style, scoring the game-winner in the 93rd minute to put the Sounders back in MLS Cup.
“I had a couple days to prepare,” Svensson said about finally being cleared to resume training after confirming to the press that he was the player who had tested positive. “I’ve been watching and cheering. I’m happy they’ve fought and won before this one. I didn’t want this season to end with me on the sideline.”
When asked about his positive test, Svensson went on to say, “I didn’t have any symptoms. I was fortunate I went through the virus very easily. When you can’t train, you build up something inside you and want to show how happy you are to play again.”
