Two spots in the 2020 Olympics are on the line tonight in the Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying semi-final matches. The winner of each game will secure their spot in Tokyo, while the losers will be eliminated from contention. Canada faces Costa Rica at 4:00 PM PT, followed by the United States against Mexico at 7:00 PM, both at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.

Canada topped Group B with a 3-0-0 record, handily winning all three group-stage games by a combined margin of 22-0. Mexico came in second in Group B, losing to Canada, 2-0, in the deciding match. The United States similarly cruised through Group A, winning their three games by a combined 18-0, while Costa Rica went 2-1-0 to take second place.

The winners of tonight’s games will play in a championship game on Sunday afternoon, but beyond bragging rights that match will have no impact on Olympic qualification. The USWNT is coming into today’s game with a 26-match unbeaten streak and has never failed to qualify for the Olympics. Lindsey Horan leads the team with five goals in the three group stage games, followed by Christen Press with four. U.S. head coach Vlatko Andonovski rotated his squad heavily during the group stage due to the compressed schedule of the tournament, but we should see close to a preferred starting XI given the significance of tonight’s game.

Canada’s Jordyn Huitema leads all scorers in the tournament with six goals in three matches. Canada has qualified for every Olympic tournament except 2004, where they were upset by Mexico in the qualifying tournament semi-finals. Costa Rica has reached the semi-finals in every qualifying tournament, but has yet win in this round and reach the Olympics.
