New video better illustrates distance on Raúl Ruidíaz’s goal

30 yards was not much of an exaggeration.

By now, you’ve probably heard about Raúl Ruidíaz’s 30-yard strike against Sacramento Republic in Wednesday’s scrimmage. If you’re the type of person reading this post, you’ve probably even seen video of the goal from the highlights the Sounders released.

But even the official video is tough to fully appreciate, as it’s shot from behind the goal and doesn’t really give a ton of perspective. Well, Ruidíaz seems to have heard your pleas and shared a video on Instagram that gives a better sense of just how good of a hit it was.

I’ll be the first to admit that even as someone who was there, I felt like calling it a “30-yard blast” was a bit hyperbolic. After all, we don’t see goals from that distance very often.

While this video may not be as pretty as the others we’ve seen, it does a wonderful job of showing us of basically confirming that distance. Combined with the patterns on the field which are conveniently five yards apar, we can see that he was just about 29 yards away.

Yeah, we can’t wait for the season to start either.
