Match Fitness: Menswear Madness, Quarterfinals

This time they’re actually the quarterfinals.

Mike Russell / Sounder at Heart

First off, sorry folks. I swear, I’m a reasonably smart person, and I genuinely don’t know why I erroneously thought that the last round was the quarterfinals. It wasn’t, and the title for the last post has been changed appropriately. Now that we’re actually in the quarterfinals, things are really heating up. We had another tie that had to be broken with a Twitter poll, we have two 6 seeds and only one 1 seed (honestly, the number of you that voted for Stefan Frei’s fancy bartender look makes me sad and a little bit scared), and there’s sure to be nothing but heart-break from here on out.

Interestingly, the 2 seed from each quadrant has made it to this point, but will any of them be in the semis? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Menswear Madness Quarterfinals Bracket

Let’s find our Final Four!

#2 Dandy Bryan Meredith vs #6 Stefan Frei: Craft Mixologist

There really should be no competition here. Meredith’s look is on point, with his pocket square tying the pink from his pants into the rest of the outfit, the hat and belt serving to keep the black moving through the whole look, and the band of his Apple Watch adding some texture. Meanwhile the only real positives from Frei’s look is the matching Louis Vuitton belt and duffle. We all like what we like, and that’s great, but the fact that this look from Frei has reached this point keeps me up at night.

Solids & Tonal Styling

#2 Jordan Morris in Grayscale vs #6 Román Torres’ Sunglasses

This look from Jordan Morris is simple, it’s classic, it’s something that literally any person could put together a version of and pull off. The ‘fit is good, his hair is great, it’s just an excellent look from top to bottom. Román Torres needed a Twitter poll to get him here (another win that I personally disagree with, but that’s the way things go some times). The look from Torres is good, but does it deserve to be in the semis?

Color-blocking & Prints

#1 Jordy Delem’s Snack Jacket vs #2 The Roldans

Jordy Delem and his boys are, surprisingly enough, the only 1 seed left in the bracket. Much has been said of the fact that Delem and Jones are wearing identical Gucci belts, and this jacket from Delem is one of my absolute favorite things anyone wore last season, but I think we should all take a moment to appreciate his custom chain with his initials on it. It’s a flex, but is it enough to push him past the Roldans and their matching chains? The brothers Roldan and their parents look great, and I’m a vocal fan of both of their styles generally and specifically in this photo, but they may have met a competitor that they just can’t beat in the quarterfinals.

Patterns & Kim Kee-hee

#2 Love, Kee-hee vs #4 Kelvin LeerDAMN

It almost feels unfair that two of the guys who were in the conversation for most stylish guy on the team in 2019 have to square off in the quarterfinals, but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Both of Kim Kee-hee and Kelvin Leerdam are represented by one of their best looks from the season, each distilling the essence of their style into one great ‘fit. Both are excellent, and the kind of thing that anyone could wear, but it would truly be a shame to have to say goodbye to Kee-hee (again) so soon.

Once again, let’s spare a thought for the looks that we leave behind.

What outfits will you miss most as we move on to the semifinals? Is there a look that’s still in it that you’re most surprised by? Leave your thoughts in the comments, and I’ll be back for the semis!
