Tonight’s classic game is one of the biggest wins in the team’s MLS history: the Seattle Sounders’ win over LAFC in the 2019 Western Conference Final. Unlike the previous re-aired games, this one isn’t set in the confines of CenturyLink Field. Instead, this statement win took place with downtown Los Angeles as the backdrop.
Following a back-and-forth game against FC Dallas that required a hattrick from Jordan Morris to see the Sounders through and then a relatively easy win over Real Salt Lake, the Sounders needed to be better everywhere, but especially defensively, if they were going to travel to LA and beat Bob Bradley’s LAFC that had dominated the league. That’s exactly what Brian Schmetzer’s Sounders did as they turned up to the Banc of California Stadium ready to defend and counter, and they dominated on both fronts. Kim Kee-hee and Xavier Arreaga put in a defensive display for the ages, as their hard tackling left LAFC shaken, and Nico Lodeiro and Raúl Ruidíaz carved the defense open to the tune of 3 goals and 2 assists between the two of them.
At the end of the 90 minutes the Sounders were lifting a trophy and preparing to lift another one, and Brian Schmetzer was “feeling better than Bob.”
This is the piece of cinema, the work of art that we all get to enjoy tonight.
