This afternoon MLS is stepping up to help fill the soccer void by re-airing what is undoubtedly the most out-of-control regular season MLS game between the Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers. This trip to Providence Park from April of 2014 saw Clint Dempsey score not only his first hat trick in a Seattle Sounders jersey, but his first MLS hat trick.
The Sounders have had some big come-from-behind results over the years, whether they be draws or wins, but few of them have happened away from home, and likely none have been as dramatic or in as difficult an environment as this 4-4 draw away against the Timbers. This game showed the kind of attacking prowess and tenacity that would eventually propel the 2014 Seattle Sounders to a US Open Cup-Supporters Shield double, and provided the first real look of the kind of player Dempsey would be while at his best in Seattle, as well as the partnership that he and Obafemi Martins would form as Martins provided the assist on two of Dempsey’s three goals. Between the two of them, Dempsey and Martins would contribute 6 goals and 1 assist over the three games that followed the draw in Portland.
This afternoon’s broadcast is a part of the MLS Classics: Remix series, where MLSSoccer.com personalities are joined by people who were involved in the matches being shown for the broadcast. For today’s game Pa-Madou Kah and Kenny Cooper will be joining David Gass and Calen Carr.
Join us to remember and appreciate how much Clint Dempsey hated the Portland Timbers, and the heights to which that hate took him.
